Optimal Design of an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with Cobalt Iron Core

The use of a cobalt-iron (VaCoFe) core is investigated as an alternative to silicon-iron (FeSi) in the design interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM). Considering VaCoFe and FeSi cores, spoke-type IPMSM geometry optimized for torque range up 40 N·m, providing general comparative analysis between materials. This done considering application four-motor competition vehicle’s powertrain. A genetic optimization algorithm coupled motor’s electromagnetic thermal hybrid analytical/finite-element model provide sufficiently accurate results within feasible time. allows estimated increase 64% same efficiency level, or 5% torque. After using detailed time-dependent model, potential 3.2% efficiency, weight reduction 4.1%, decrease 9.6% volume were found at 20 N·m. In addition, motor volume, 51.9% with 1.1% when compared FeSi.
